About the Energy Work calculator
Calculate the work done by a force, or solve for the force, distance or power involved.
How to use the Energy Work calculator
- Choose what to solve for: work (W), force (F), distance (d) or power (P).
- Enter Force (N), Distance (m), the Angle ΞΈ and Time (s) for power.
- Press Calculate.
Formula and method
W = F Γ d Γ cos ΞΈ and P = W Γ· t. Work is in joules and power in watts.
Worked example
Pushing with 100 N over 10 m in the direction of motion does 1,000 J of work. At 60Β° to the direction of motion it is 500 J.
Tips
- Only the part of the force along the direction of movement does work.
- If the angle is 90Β° no work is done by that force.
Frequently Asked Questions
Work is energy transferred. Power is how fast the work is done.
