About the Density Calculator
Density is mass per unit volume. Enter any two of mass, volume and density to find the third.
How to use the Density Calculator
- Fill in two of Mass (m), Volume (V) and Density (Ο).
- Press the matching Find button or Calculate.
Formula and method
Ο = m Γ· V, so m = Ο Γ V and V = m Γ· Ο.
Worked example
800 kg of a liquid filling 1 mΒ³ has a density of 800 kg/mΒ³. For comparison, water is about 1,000 kg/mΒ³, so this liquid would float on water.
A metal block. A block with a mass of 270 g and a volume of 100 cmΒ³ has a density of 2.7 g/cmΒ³, which matches aluminium.
When to use the Density Calculator
- Identifying a material from its mass and volume.
- Finding the mass of an object from its volume and density.
- Checking density problems in physics and chemistry.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing units, such as grams with cubic metres.
- Measuring an irregular object's volume without accounting for air spaces.
Tips
- Keep units consistent: kg with mΒ³, or g with cmΒ³.
- Density changes with temperature and pressure, especially for gases.
Frequently Asked Questions
An object floats if its average density is lower than the density of the fluid.
Ice is less dense than liquid water, about 0.92 g/cmΒ³.
