KE = Β½mvΒ² | m = mass (kg), v = velocity (m/s)
About the Energy calculator
Calculate kinetic, potential or thermal energy, or convert energy between units.
How to use the Energy calculator
- Choose an Energy Type: Kinetic, Potential, Thermal or Unit Converter.
- Enter the required values, such as Mass, Velocity, Height or ΞT and the material.
- Press Calculate.
Formula and method
Kinetic: KE = Β½ m vΒ². Potential: PE = m g h. Thermal: Q = m c ΞT. Energy is measured in joules (J).
Worked example
A 2 kg object moving at 10 m/s has 100 J of kinetic energy. A 5 kg object 10 m up has 5 Γ 9.81 Γ 10 = 490.5 J of potential energy.
Tips
- Use SI units: kilograms, metres and seconds.
- Specific heat values for common materials are built in.
Frequently Asked Questions
