RMS Voltage (Root Mean Square)
0.707 V
PERIOD (T)
1.00s
NYQUIST MIN.
2.0 Hz
The waveform oscillates every 1.0s. To avoid aliasing, ensure your sampling rate exceeds 2.0 Hz.
About the Signal Processing Calculator
Generate the key parameters of a basic waveform and check whether your sampling rate is high enough.
How to use the Signal Processing Calculator
- Choose the Waveform Type: sine, square, sawtooth or triangle.
- Enter the Frequency (Hz), Amplitude (V), Phase Shift (Rad) and Sampling Rate (Hz).
- Press Calculate.
Formula and method
Period = 1 Γ· frequency. Samples per cycle = sampling rate Γ· frequency. The Nyquist frequency is half the sampling rate: signals above it cannot be captured correctly (aliasing). A sine wave is A Γ sin(2Οft + Ο).
Worked example
A 1 kHz signal sampled at 8 kHz has a period of 1 ms and 8 samples per cycle, and the Nyquist limit is 4 kHz.
Tips
- Sample at least twice as fast as the highest frequency you need.
- Square and sawtooth waves contain many harmonics, so they need a higher sampling rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
A distortion that occurs when a signal is sampled too slowly, making high frequencies look like lower ones.
