About the Ideal Weight Calculator

Ideal body weight formulas estimate a healthy weight for a given height and sex. This calculator compares four well-known formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi) so you can see the range they suggest rather than relying on a single number.

How to use the Ideal Weight Calculator

  1. Select Male or Female.
  2. Enter your Stature (cm).
  3. Press the calculate button to see the result from each formula side by side.

Formula and method

The formulas were originally written for inches above 5 feet (60 inches). For example, the Robinson formula gives 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 ft for men and 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 ft for women. Devine, Miller and Hamwi use different base weights and increments per inch.

Worked example

A man who is 180 cm (about 70.9 inches) is 10.9 inches over 5 ft. The Robinson formula gives 52 + 1.9 Γ— 10.9 β‰ˆ 72.7 kg. The other formulas give slightly different values, which is why a range is more useful than one figure.

Tips

  • Ideal body weight formulas ignore muscle mass, bone structure and age.
  • Treat the numbers as a reference range. BMI and body fat percentage give a fuller picture.
  • The formulas are also used by clinicians to estimate medication doses, but doctors adjust them for the individual.

Frequently Asked Questions

None is perfect. They were created for clinical dosing and were never meant to be personal targets, so compare them and pick a realistic point within the healthy BMI range.
Not necessarily. Your goal weight should reflect how you feel, your fitness, and advice from your doctor.
