Formula and method
Calories are estimated with MET values (Metabolic Equivalent of Task): calories = MET Γ weight (kg) Γ duration (hours).
Worked example
Running at a moderate pace (about 9.8 MET) for 30 minutes at 70 kg: 9.8 Γ 70 Γ 0.5 β 343 kcal.
Tips
- Wearables and machines also estimate calories and can differ by 20 percent or more.
- Do not "eat back" every burned calorie; estimates tend to run high.
