About the Word Counter Pro
Count the words, characters, sentences and paragraphs in any text as you type, and see an estimated reading time. Paste an essay, upload a document or write directly in the box to check it against a word limit.
How to use the Word Counter Pro
- Type, paste or upload a file in the text area. The counts update as you write.
- Read the totals for Words, Chars, Paragraphs and Read Time above the editor.
- Tick Exclude stopwords to ignore common words like "the" and "and" in keyword statistics, and use 1 Word / 2 Words / 3 Words to see how often words and phrases repeat.
- Use the case buttons (Sentence case, lowercase, UPPERCASE, Capitalize Words) to reformat the text.
Formula and method
Words are counted as groups of characters separated by whitespace. Reading time is estimated from the word count at roughly 200 to 250 words per minute for silent reading and about 130 words per minute for speaking aloud.
Worked example
A 1,000-word blog post takes about 4 to 5 minutes to read. A 5-minute speech is roughly 650 words.
Tips
- Check whether your limit counts words or characters and whether spaces are included.
- Use the phrase counts to spot words you repeat too often.
- For SEO, focus on covering the topic well. There is no magic word count.
Frequently Asked Questions
Any run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks counts as one word, so "well-known" is one word.
