Formula and method
Sort the values. If there is an odd number of values, the median is the middle one. If even, it is the average of the two middle ones.
Worked example
12, 45, 7, 23, 9, 31 sorts to 7, 9, 12, 23, 31, 45. The median is (12 + 23) ÷ 2 = 17.5.
Tips
- The median is better than the mean for skewed data such as incomes or house prices.
