About the Dilution calculator

Work out how much stock solution and solvent you need to make a more dilute solution.

How to use the Dilution calculator

  1. Enter the Initial concentration (C1) and its Units.
  2. Enter the Final concentration (C2) and Final volume, or a Dilution factor.
  3. Press Calculate.

Formula and method

C₁ Γ— V₁ = Cβ‚‚ Γ— Vβ‚‚, so V₁ = Cβ‚‚ Γ— Vβ‚‚ Γ· C₁. The solvent to add is Vβ‚‚ βˆ’ V₁.

Worked example

To make 500 mL of 2 M solution from a 10 M stock, take V₁ = 2 Γ— 500 Γ· 10 = 100 mL of stock and add 400 mL of solvent.

Tips

  • Add acid to water, never water to acid.
  • Use the same units for both concentrations.
